For months, I have been filling Lara’s Life with stories about saying yes more. Partly this is inspired by Shonda Rhimes’ amazing book A Year of Yes, which, if you haven’t read it, download it today. It’s awesome and inspiring and laugh-out-loud funny.
This has also been fueled by the fact that I’m really good at staying home, staying cozy, and shutting the world out. The world can be so scary, you guys! So full of things that can hurt me, so full of people I don’t always know how to interact with. Some days—especially cold, dark winter days—getting out there can be a hot mess of a challenge.
In order to give all that internal fear a swift kick in the pants, I signed up to tell a story at The Moth this week. If you aren’t familiar with The Moth, the format is that 10 people come forward, and each of them tells a 5-minute story.
The theme was “Backwards,” and I wanted to tell a story about my mom’s dementia, and how her illness had paved a way for the two of us to become closer. It sounds so messed up (i.e. backwards), but my mom’s personality change—the way she softened and became more easy-going—was incredibly healing for our relationship.
So that’s what I did. I stood up there and for five minutes I talked in front of a room filled with, I don’t know, maybe 200 people? It was terrifying! It was impossible. But I did it. And at the end of the night, I came in second!
I don’t know if I would have been able to do this a year ago. But writing about being able to say yes and creating whole chapters in Lara’s Life where this character (Lara, that’s me) says yes and watches great things happen as a result—that’s made it easier for me to be her. And that’s the magic of Author Your Life.
